When I first moved to Charleston 3 years ago the smell of the pluff mud was absolutely horrific to my scenes. I had come from the West growing up in the mountains literally in the pine trees of Montana. To me the smell of fresh air and pine trees was/ is heaven! The pluff mud was stagnant, heavy and much to organic for me. It smelled like compost fresh off the farm that you throw in your garden which is an acquired smell.  Now every time I come home from visiting Montana or wherever my travels may take me I step off the plane into that ohhhh so sweet smell of the pluff mud. Home Sweet Home is Charleston where the salty air mixes with jasmine and the slippery muddy waters of the marsh. Oh yeah and somewhere in there you can smell the fresh pralines moving thru the air from Market Street.

Fall on Bohicket River is the largest painting I have completed to date. I have to tell you I am very proud of this painting. It exudes so much amazing energy and good vibes that make me smile every time I look at it. This can often be difficult to achieve when looking at one's own work. Especially when intimidated by such a large blank canvas staring at you in the face.  

There are many challenges to painting large, I don't care what any artist says! It really is not that easy. I will tell you about what works in this painting. The underpainting was done with Quinacrindone Magenta which is a beautiful almost transparent magenta. Allowing the magenta to come thru in areas brings a deeper dimension to the painting and lays down the foundation for a painting that could become nothing but happy and energetic. Originally I set out to use the coral and tangerines against a very hazy almost violet grey sky and an olive green marsh water. As I think this would be a dramatic a beautiful color scheme. However when I mix my grays they turn out turquoise, cobalt, lime green and a vibrant pink...ha.  As the gallery owner of Michael Mitchell says, "Sorry Im so happy!" Even though I don't throw my paint out of gallon size house paint cans and chain smoke miserably, I am very much an expressionistic painter. If I am unhappy I simply cannot and most of the time will not paint, if I did or do the painting turns out horrible. Not that you have to be miserable to be an expressionistic painter. I like the way my eye travels through this painting as well. An interesting and almost complex trail yet my eye always comes back to the focal point by way of the curved bank on the right, bouncing off of the coral water reflection on the left and up to the tree line at the horizon. Somehow your eye continues up into the sky thru the small blue channel between the golden thick clouds and back around to the left where the tangerine cloud to the top keeps us from exiting the marsh scape. I say somehow because we always intend to keep our audience from leaving our painting and every once in a while I accomplish this effortlessly.

Inspired by the beach at Seabrook Island in Charleston where the ocean bends and meets the tree line. I tried to capture the warmth of the sun and the cool breeze of the ocean in the fall. I paint with emotion and feeling, this painting is all about the sounds I hear of the ocean.

Part of my challenge to paint 47 paintings is also to gather "Spirit Places" of my friends, family and mine and paint them large scale for my next series. "Spirit Places" are the places where we pay our best attention, where our bodies and minds feel most alive and where we feel electrified. I have quite a few spirit places and would not be surprised if some of mine are also your spirit places! Standing in this exact location back home in MT is one of mine.

A modern and abstract view of the marsh land of the American South. This view is within the densely wooded area where black swamp water meets vibrant ferns, palms and grasses. It is a magical place especially when the light filters through the trees. You can smell the sweet warm pluff mud...I know that may not sound pleasant but once you've lived here for a year or two you learn to love it.

Oyster Bank II by Marissa Vogl

This painting is a pair to Oyster Bank III, which is painted from photos I took one of our days kayaking the intercoastal waters of South Carolina. It was a cool windy day with rain off and on. I really like the gray sky against the vibrant green grasses. I use a pallete knife to create dramatic and unique "brush" strokes, which add texture to my work. I have learned to control the pallete knife to get large bold strokes or controlled fine lines. Although I do use my brushes I love how a pallete knife allows me to express emotions thru color application and a more abstract approach to a landscape.

Indian Paintbrush on the Missouri by Marissa Vogl

I live in South Carolina but my heart will always be Montana. This painting is a view of the Missouri River and the highway that runs through the steep canyon walls. I added red flowers in honor of the Indian Paintbrush found all over Montana. It once was an endangered flower, it still might be I am not sure. It is one of my favorite wildflowers of Montana.

These small daily paintings are many things to me. They push me to "just paint", they are a way for me to study color combination and the way the stroke of the pallete knife or brush affects the painting dynamic. This particular painting started out with a Red Oxide wash which is a translucent paint color that allows for a lot of depth when I allow the oxide to show thru the paint. I then mix the majority of my colors I plan on using before I begin painting. This way I can study the affects of the colors together on my pallete before applying to the actual painting. Using only a pallete knife to apply color I am able to get a lot of texture and movement in the paint that adds to the interest of my work.

We just built a new home where I currently look outside to this view. I often struggle with myself and the choices we make. In this case it is the amazing wooded area where we live and the dense population of wildlife that live here with us. This view will soon be developed into homes like ours. I wanted to capture it before it is gone.
