"Deep South" A glimpse into the marshland of the Low Country
"Deep South"

A combination of palette knife and brushes were used to create this high energy landscape. You can imagine all the life scurrying beneath the grassy marsh and the gurgling water as the tide rises. I created this painting by means of using only my memory to explore light, color, composition and subject. Usually I use photos that I take for reference, I think these photos are important in my process but it is encouraging to know that my memory is strong and able to create. I am back on track and painting pieces that I enjoy looking at! Whoo Hooo!
Perhaps my dear friend Harold played a significant role in reigning in my painting skills today. Harold was my grandmothers partner and boyfriend who past away this week. Harold was in his 90's and as life goes on so did Harold. He was not one to complain or feel badly. Harold was battling cancer and made a choice to not have chemo treatments as he did not like how the chemo made him feel. I can only imagine that he was pleasantly pleased with his life and all his accomplishments. For Harold "Father Time" was a part of life that he was willing to accept. I can only hope and pray to be so strong! Harold lived his life as many hope, he picked up his first golf club in his 80's so he could spend time with my Grandmother on the course. I only know bits and pieces of Harold's life but if he were to tell us his story it would be an engaging and amazing novel. I know enough to tell you that I admire, respect and love Harold very much. He is in good hands and great company now.

Red Apple Study I

I have had a challenging time mastering the color red. This apple study allowed me to play with the mixing of different shades and values of red to achieve that brightness that anything red and shiny gives off. I still have a bit of learning to do but for the time being I am pretty happy with the results. What did I learn....well I now know that I need to start out with pure red pigment as my highlights or brightest shade of red from there I just need to mix darker shades and add shadows of reds to allow the pure pigment to pop.

Lara's Pears I
SOLD
"Lara's Pears I" is an original oil, small study painting I did in preperation for a larger more abstract pear painting. Many small quick brush strokes make up large dramatic shapes in this painting. I like how such a small range in color choices can make such a large contrast in the light and darks. Also the way the lighter more minty greens shine through the strokes of periwinkle creating the illusion of light filtering through the foliage.
This painting was featured today in a beautiful online treasury titled 'Rain in the Garden'
